Curricula

This interactive and competency-based e-Learning curriculum, developed and evaluated in collaboration with trans community members and their allies, provides an engaging interface through which to build knowledge and skills in the provision of trans-affirming sexual assault care. This curriculum, which was updated March 2021, is free-of-charge for those who complete a request form. It comprises an introduction, seven lessons, and a conclusion that can be completed as separate modules. The approximate running time for the entire e-Learning is 1 hour and 15 minutes.

The first three lessons — Key Terms, Experiences of Sexual Assault, and Interactions with Healthcare — introduce the issues relevant to working with trans sexual assault survivors. Through these lessons, you will be familiarized with key concepts used to understand trans communities and the issues of relevance to them. You will also learn about the social conditions that shape their experiences, particularly in healthcare settings. The latter four lessons outline the core elements of the post-sexual assault clinical encounter, including trans affirming approaches to Initial Assessment, Medical Care, Forensic Examination, and Discharge and Referral. While based on competencies specific to the practice of forensic nursing, the information in these lessons may also have relevance to your role in general healthcare or social service settings.

Intended Use of the learning from the curriculum

This curriculum on trans-affirming care in the sexual assault context includes a general introduction to the issue (Key Terms, Experiences of Sexual Assault, and Interactions with Healthcare) as well as core elements for the practice of forensic nursing (Initial Assessment, Medical Care, Forensic Examination, and Discharge & Referral). This curriculum, comprising a training module, facilitator’s guide, and training manual, is ideal for those wishing to lead an in-person training at their organization.
