Delaney Drachenberg
Peer Leader Advisor, Northern Territories
Delaney Drachenberg, or "Della/Laney" (he/she/they/it) is a 26 year old hormonally intersex person who is in the constant, ongoing process of returning to their Indigenous roots and decolonizing their mind, heart and soul. Born to a half white, half Indigenous man who grew up in the mid 60s to early 80s and who was separated from his Indigenous roots, Della has only recently found out their true origins as non-status Ojibway mixed person, and not as previously thought, Métis.
Privileged to have accepting, supportive parents, Laney has had many years to explore their gender, spirituality, and mental health. Laney views her gender as an experience and something that can change as he ages and grows as a person, and is something for him to learn to grow alongside, rather than try to make complete sense of. Delaney views their life and experiences as a marginalized person in various ways as intersectional and incapable of being separated from one another. Her gender and sexuality, spirituality related to omnitheism, Indigenous identity, identity as a survivor and victim of severe trauma, disabilities (mental and physical), and identity as a polyamorous person are all deeply intertwined and cannot be cut into clear boxes.
He advocates for decolonization, harm reduction, inclusion of intersex, gender diverse and 2spirit voices in important conversations, and reform of political, medical and justice institutions with trauma-informed and aware care at the forefront of these dialogues.
Fun fact: it was an acrobatic aerial circus performer as a tween! It did aerial hooping.
