This introduction describes the development of the e-Learning Curriculum. It also provides a brief tutorial on how to use the interactive features of the curriculum and an overview of its content, including core concepts and key competencies that frame the seven lessons.

Lesson 1: Key Terms

In this lesson, you will learn important terms related to trans identities and experiences. You will also learn how to use these terms correctly in practice.

Lesson 2: Experiences of Sexual Assault 

In this lesson, you will learn that sexual assault against trans persons is prevalent and occurs within the context of structural and interpersonal violence, including transphobia and other forms of oppression.

Lesson 3: Interactions with Healthcare 

In this lesson, you will learn about stigma, discrimination, and cissexist beliefs experienced by trans persons using the health system and the impact of these on their interactions with service providers (e.g., medical gatekeeping).

Lesson 4: Initial Assessment 

In this lesson, you will acquire the knowledge and skills relevant to the initial assessment of trans clients who have experienced sexual assault. This includes using appropriate language, respecting boundaries, proper documentation practices, and understanding gender dysphoria and experiences of unique trauma. This lesson also includes a case study focused on conducting a trans-affirming initial assessment.

Lesson 5: Medical Care

In this lesson, you will acquire knowledge and skills related to the medical care of trans survivors of sexual assault, including the implications of HRT for administering emergency contraceptives, antibiotics, and HIV prophylactics. You will also learn about the implications of transition-related surgeries for susceptibility to injuries and STIs and the intersecting factors that might increase HIV risk for trans persons. This lesson also includes a case study on the provision of trans-affirming medical care.

Lesson 6: Forensic Examination 

In this lesson, you will acquire the knowledge and skills specific to conducting a forensic examination of trans clients who have experienced sexual assault. This includes how to initiate the examination, use proper equipment and tools, and recognize the importance of prostheses as potential safety items.

Lesson 7: Discharge & Referral

In this lesson, you will acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to assess risk of further victimization with trans clients who have experienced a sexual assault, develop a safety plan, and make referrals to trans-positive services and supports in your community.
